RPG Maker 2003 was released very shortly after its predecessor and is more of an upgrade to RPG Maker 2000. It does not require programming knowledge, as everything is done through events. Making someone talk just requires you to click on the "Show message" button and writing down what they want to say.
RPG Maker 2003 uses a default battle system that is side view, like Final Fantasy. Those up for a challenge may want to instead try making their own battle system. Many different types of games have been made for it, such as tactical RPGs, action RPGs, or even puzzle games. RPG Maker 2003, like other makers in the series, comes packed with a large, whole set of default audio and graphic resources (Run Time Package, or RTP) all ready for use, allowing beginners to create beautiful maps and scenes.
RPG Maker 2003 has a very similar look and commands as RPG Maker 2000 does. The main differences are the addition of Classes, the default Side view battle, being able to use mp3s, and the ability to use 50 pictures on screen instead of 20. While RPG Maker XP has come out and RMVX is soon to come, some people still use RPG Maker 2003 because you don't have to program or copy a side view battle script, it is already the default option. Other than this, it remains pretty much the same as RPG Maker 2000.
